While I have only been a member of CYL less than a year, the impact it had on me was undeniable. I first joined CYL as a participant in the Think Like a Genius challenge last summer, as member of the Girls’ Inc team. The funny thing is, I had joined Think Like a Genius because I had run out of things to do, and it looked kinda interesting. It’s strange to me now how that chance encounter could have led me to such a supportive and generous community that I am so grateful for.
The Think Like a Genius Challenge is a competition involving youth organizations across Denver, where groups of teenagers come together to create a project for the community based on the annual theme. Last summer, my group decided to make a website to connect youth to information and resources to combat substance abuse. And while creating the project itself was wonderful, what was most impactful about the experience was being able to hear from other organizations and kids. Another group created care packages with Narcan they would give out freely at local libraries and recreation centers. I got to know some of the people who worked in CYL, who made me feel really welcome in ways other organizations hadn’t.
Of course, like all of use, community service is a big part of my life that I’m always looking to expand. So afterwards, when I heard about the Youth Advisory Board, I thought it was the perfect opportunity. A whole group whose job is to help other people find ways to better help their communities. It was a new level of interconnectedness I hadn’t seen before and I was excited to learn more about CYL and the people apart of it. And its been a great experience. I’ve gotten to know students from all across Denver who are just as passionate, if not more so, about the environment and social justice issues as I am. I’ve met with so many different organizations I didn’t even know existed and have been able to further explore my passions within them. I’ve gotten more comfortable with the idea of leading and the type of leader I am. I’m even giving a speech right now, which, as the most introverted person on the planet, is amazing.
Before I joined CYL I had a vague notion of who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do with little known resources or avenues on how to get there. Now, I know how and why I’m passionate about the environment, and I know what I can do to help. This past year at CYL has been wonderful, and I’m so grateful to all the people who have helped me this year. I’m excited to get to know you all better and be able to support you all as you have supported me. Thank you!
